Flawed Coins: How To Cash In Big With Coin Flaws

Flawed coins are worth a lot of money because they are very rare.  There have been several noted examples of flawed coins being accidently released into the public recently.  If you can get your hands on these they will appreciate in value nicely.  The mints do not want to release these coins because of pride in their work, so you will have to look hard to find flawed coins to buy, but it will be worth the effort when you do.

Examples of Flawed Coins that collectors want are:

  • George Washington 2007 Philadelphia Dollars
  • Wisconsin 2005 State Quarters Errors
  • Random Individual Coin Errors

Flawed George Washington 2007 Philadelphia Dollars

Recently it was discovered that there were an unknown number of the new George Washington gold colored dollars released from Philadelphia that made it past quality control at the mint.  They reportedly they lack the date, the mint mark and the inscription “In God We Trust” on the side of the coin.  The error was due in part to a new, high volume manufacturing process that is still getting the kinks worked out of.  The mint is pushing to replace dollar bills with dollar coins since they are more sustainable, eco-friendly and cost effective and the dollar is now used much more than in the past due to inflation.  The coins last 10 years whereas a dollar bill lasts about 2 years.

Wisconsin 2005 State Quarter Error

These quarters have an extra leaf on the corn cob on the back of the quarter.  The quarter shows an ear of corn, a wheel of cheese and a cow.  There were an estimated 1000 flawed coins released in 2005.  These quarters have already reached multiple times their value and are no longer being made.

Random Individual Coin Flaws and Errors

While the above two are examples of a large number of flaws getting by mint inspectors, random flaws happen on occasion on many types of coins from all over the world.  Flaws include misstamping of the coin so that only part of the coin’s design is showing on the face of the blank, blank sides, date errors, missing edges and double stamping.

Flawed coins are a type of numismatic rare coin that is highly collectible.  They will sell for way more money than the face value of the coin; as much 40 to 60 times more at first and more as time goes on.  They make a great investment and fun addition to your coin collection.
